My senior thesis project—Wianuszek Snów—is an experimental auto-fiction graphic novel that explores themes of nostalgia, queer/trans identity, and polish culture, through a dynamic fantasy tale of slavic paganism taking place in the countryside of south-eastern Poland. The story follows a young transgender Polish boy as he reconciles with his estranged grandma, whom he quickly discovers is secretly a slavic pagan witch. The grandma helps the boy uncover his secret ability to communicate with the slavic pagan Gods, and prepares him as he embarks on a treacherous journey through the Polish countryside, encountering many slavic pagan monsters along the way, in a vital mission to 'save' Poland from conservative christian nationalism and restore the nation to its slavic pagan roots, before it’s too late. This graphic novel serves as a political commentary of not only the current socio-political state of Poland, but also for cultures and communities all across the world, especially in this politically-charged day and age.
